My name is Mark A. Goldman and I am herewith announcing my candidacy for President of the United States

Mark A. Goldman                                                                       Dated: 3/5/07

It is entirely possible that some Americans are better qualified than I am to be President of the United States. I hope before the next presidential election, that you and I will be given the opportunity to vote for someone who is better qualified than I am.

My Campaign

I have no intention of launching a campaign in support of my candidacy. No one has asked me to be a candidate for President and I have no concrete evidence that my candidacy will be welcome news to anyone. I have no obvious constituency and I don’t have the resources to compete in the electoral process the way other candidates do.

I wouldn’t want to do what they do if I did have the resources. I believe how we go about electing a President is as broken as our government itself.

I am not sure that I possess all of the qualifications that you would like to see in a President, even though I believe I do possess the essential qualities required. My candidacy gives you at least one opportunity, if necessary, to vote for someone who has those essential qualities, the most important of which is this: I am willing to take the oath of office and, to the best of my ability, keep my word.

Certainly, if elected, I would need a great deal of help. Your help. And I would hope that if I came to you for advice or assistance that you would not deny me… for the sake of your country, and for the sake of your extended human family.

While I am not asking you to support my candidacy, I am indeed asking something of you, for I believe I have earned the right to ask:

I gave you my word more than once and you gave me yours. And I believe I’ve kept my word. I stood up for you even when you wouldn’t stand up for yourself. I lie awake at night wondering what I might do to keep you safe and free and when I get up in the morning, I set out again one more day to do just that. Sometimes I shed tears thinking that I am failing. Sometimes I think I should just quit. But in the end, I never do.

So you might say, “I don’t even know you. I never asked you to lie awake at night worrying about me. And when in God’s name did I ever make any promises to you?”

I will tell you when:  Every time you stood up and put your hand over your heart and said, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…”

To whom did you think you were making that pledge?

I know when I put my hand over my heart I made that pledge to you. Even though the words say that we pledge allegiance to a flag, I always knew that what we do when we take that pledge is pledge our allegiance to sacred values that we share, and who we pledge to is one another. I’ve kept my faith with you and my word has been good and now I’m asking you to do the same. And what is it I am asking of you?

Only this: In the next election I am asking you not to vote for any candidate who you believe in your heart is less qualified to serve than I am.

Is that asking too much? After all, I am not asking that I be your first choice for President. I am only asking that I be your final choice if you can’t find anyone better to vote for than me. And with all my heart I hope you can find someone who would do a better job than I would if I were elected. There's plenty of time for you to find someone.

What does it mean to live in a free country and what does it mean to be free? If it takes more courage than average people have to tell the whole truth when they hold office or become candidates for office, and if people who do have the courage to tell the truth don’t believe that they could ever be elected to public office simply because they do tell the truth, then what kind of country and what kind of freedom is this?  What kind of truth am I talking about? I’m simply talking about whatever you honestly believe or know to be true in the deepest part of your being.

What I am doing is called love. What I am doing is called keeping my word.

Being able to tell the truth and live your truth is what freedom is for… and if we can’t tell each other the truth as we understand it and listen to one another with an open mind, in order to continually learn and refine the truth as we know it, how will we ever solve the critical problems we face… as individuals… as a people… as a world community? Lies or half-truths will not win us the peace and the freedom we seek, nor will it preserve what is still left of the freedoms and peace we have.

I do not belong to any political party and I do not intend to start one. Can anyone who is not a Democrat or a Republican become President of the United States? There’s only one way that it can happen… it can only happen if that candidate gets enough votes to win. All I am asking of you is that you vote as any truly honorable person would: vote for the candidate you believe is best qualified for the job.

I am only asking you to be true to your own integrity. Can’t we ask that of one another? How do you do that? You do it by standing on your own two feet and being true to yourself even if and when other people won’t be. Isn’t that what you would expect and want your President to do? And what should your President expect of you? What should anyone expect of you? I'm asking you to think about it.

Anticipated Questions

Q. Why don’t you think that those already running are better qualified than you are?
A.
Because the most important qualification that a President must have to be worthy of the office is absolute integrity when it comes to keeping his or her oath of office. When I saw that the Constitution was under attack I made a substantial effort to speak out about it. In fact, that’s what I’m doing right now. All of the other candidates have had ample opportunity to do what I have done and am doing now. Given their visibility and position, they would have made and would still make an enormous difference if they only had the courage and the integrity to do it. But they didn’t have those qualities and apparently they still don’t, even though the evidence is overwhelming that our Constitution has been under attack. We have all lost a great deal because of the infidelity, incompetence, negligence and/or cowardice of those who took an oath of office, (or a pledge of allegiance), and failed to keep their word.

Q. Perhaps the current candidates didn’t say very much before because they felt that the best strategy for defending the Constitution was to wait until they could run for President, which is what they are doing now. Wasn’t that a reasonable thing for them to do?

A. No. If you read my accumulated writings, beginning as early as February of 2001, you will see that there was always sufficient information available to anyone who wanted to look for it… evidence that George Bush, members of his administration, many others inside and outside of government, including those who sit on both sides of the isle, were betraying our trust. None of those now running did what they could have done to protect precious life and treasure. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people have been killed or betrayed in one form or another because of their infidelity. We have all been betrayed. Time was of the essence. It still is. Every day people are dying, losing their limbs and their homes, because people who took an oath fail to honor their word.

As far as I can tell, those who are now running for office stood by in silence while lives were destroyed, justice betrayed, our treasury dismantled, and national and international crimes committed. It’s been a betrayal of the highest magnitude. They all took the same oath. Their performance while in office even as I write this, is the best evidence we have as to what kind of a President any one of them would make.

Q. Besides that one issue, what evidence is there that you are qualified to be President of the United States?

A. First of all, that one issue is not trivial. It is the most important issue we now face as a people: are we going to live in a Constitutional Democracy or in some other kind of regime where some people are above the law and the rest of us are subject to the arbitrary behavior of those elite few? The American people have been betrayed in more ways than I can list here. I have written extensively about this during the last six years. My writings are a matter of public record and they are available to any American who has internet access and is willing to take the time to look and read. Q. Are you going to pay the fees and get the signatures necessary to be put on all the state ballots come Election Day?

A. No. I’m not going to pay any fees and I don’t have money to travel, nor am I going to ask anyone to sign anything. I will answer questions, speak publicly when invited to do so, and I will serve my country to the best of my ability… as President if I am wanted, and as a citizen if I am not.

I hope you care enough about your country to insure that the next President of the United States is someone you will be proud to vote for. And I hope to God you find a way to vote for me if you can’t find anyone better qualified to serve than I am.

If you've ever asked, "But what can I do?" I'm giving you an answer.  You can stand up and vote for what you believe in.  To take a stand and tell the truth sometimes takes courage.  What can you do?  You can stand with me so that I can stand with you.  Don't vote for anyone who does not represent you.
